Vietnam visa exemption, also known as Vietnam visa waiver or Vietnam visa free, means the situation in which a foreign national is granted permission to enter Vietnam and remain there for a predetermined amount of time without needing to follow any visa procedures because the Vietnamese government has established bilateral or unilateral visa exemption agreements with the visitor's respective country.

In order to enter Vietnam, you will need a valid passport with at least six months validity remaining and a Vietnamese visa, a visa exemption document, or a written eVisa for a visa upon arrival. You may obtain a visa or a visa exemption document from a Vietnamese embassy or consulate prior to traveling to Vietnam. To obtain a written eVisa to enter, you must contact a travel agency prior to departure. U.S. citizens have reported unscrupulous travel agencies taking advantage of. If you arrive without an appropriate Vietnamese visa, exemption document, or written approval for a visa upon arrival, you will not be permitted to enter and will be subject to immediate deportation. Vietnamese visas are usually valid for only one entry, unless the traveler specifically requests a multiple-entry visa, for which there may be an increased fee. If you are planning to leave Vietnam and re-enter from another country, be sure that your visa is multiple entry. If it is only single entry, you will have to obtain another visa prior to returning to Vietnam. Generally, there are two major types of Vietnamese visas including tourist visa and business visas. 1. Tourist visas Available 1 month single entry and 1 month multiple entry. Maximum stay in Vietnam of 30 days. One-time extension of 30 days after your arrival in Vietnam. 2. Business visas Applicants should obtain the approval through their sponsor in Vietnam. Multiple entry and stay of three or six months is available.    

The Vietnam Immigration Department issues eVisas, which permit visitors to enter and leave the country within a specified time frame. You can pick up your visa and get it stamped in your passport when you arrive in Vietnam by presenting the visa acceptance letter to immigration officials at the airport. Also, passengers should ensure that their application has accurate information before submitting it, as the relevant authorities will check the information on eVisa using your passport and travel papers. They won't allow you to board the plane if your personal information is entered incorrectly.

The answer is no. You just can arrive on any day AFTER the arrival date specified in your official visa and your eVisa. You are advised to file for a fresh visa acceptance letter if your plans change, and you want to visit Vietnam before the designated arrival date.

From 24th August 2014, the Immigration Dept temporarily has stopped granting 6 months multiple visa. Therefore the maximum length you can apply is a 3 months multiple visa.
